ITINERARY:

Our shore excursion makes the journey to Marseille by bus. Both the port of Toulon and of Seyne sur Mer are about an hour from the city.

The Old Port of Marseille (Vieux Port) began life as a trading post set up by Greek settlers in 600 AD. On the south side stands Notre Dame de la Garde. Locals see this basilica as the guardian and protector of the city, nicknaming it la bonne mere, the good mother.

Located on the highest point of the city, standing 162 metres above sea level, the church offers exceptional views of the Frioul islands. Look out for Château d’If; the fortress and prison made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo.

Our Marseille shore excursion continues to Vallen des Auffes and the Abbey of St. Victor. Then we take the Canebière; the historic high street in the old quarter of Marseilles.

At the Palais Longchamp, we’ll admire the opulent fountain that is decorated with sculptures of lions, nymphs and dolphins. The equally grand building behind the fountain is home to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History.

The shore exclusion will end with some free time to explore this beautiful part of Marseille. For those of you who are feeling brave, we recommend trying Pieds Paquets. This stewed dish is made from sheep’s feet and stuffed sheep tripe.

*Shore excursions could be subject to variations due to external causes as Cruise Companies politics, weather conditions, duration of the stay of the ship in the port, legal demonstrations
